Look at this scenario:

Two business coaches approach you to sell their services.

The first one goes, “I can help you grow your business to 8-figures in 6 months. I charge just $100 per month for my services.”

Now, the second business coach doesn’t shove his services down your throat but offers you a free e-book on how to grow your business in exchange for your email address to deliver the book to you.

You go through this book and you’re blown away by the value in it.

The next day he sends you some of his past clients’ testimonials and asks if you’d love to join his business coaching program.

There’s a 110% chance you’d pick the second business coach over the first.


Because the 2nd business coach has succeeded in getting you to trust him, and believe in his ability to deliver.

That is the importance of a sales funnel in an online business.


What is a sales funnel?

A sales funnel is a step-by-step process that maps out the journey of converting a website visitor to a buying customer. It is simply all the steps involved in getting total strangers to trust you, believe in your offering, and eventually buy from you.

Without a proper sales funnel in place, it is very difficult to make any significant sales online.

People only buy from people they trust, I mean they’re giving you their hard-earned money, it is only natural that you should earn that trust—and that is why online businesses need to have a sales funnel in place.

I like to think that any online business that doesn’t have a sales funnel working for them is not serious about making sales online.

Now, let’s get down to…

How exactly do sales funnels work?

Just like its name indicates, a sales funnel is the widest at the top and the narrowest at its bottom.

This is because, as the customer journey progresses, the number of qualified prospects (or the number of prospects more likely to convert at the end of the day) reduces.

Like we defined earlier, a sales funnel involves all the steps and stages required for that website visitor to convert to a customer.

There are 4 major stages in the traditional sales funnel.

These 4 stages represent your customer’s mindset throughout their buying journey.

This is the moment at which you first catch a customer’s attention, could be through a Facebook post, a google search or an IG advert.
Your goal at this stage is to get people to know that you exist and not necessarily to sell to them.
Although, when the chemistry is just right and they are convinced about what you’re offering, customers sometimes buy immediately.
But this is usually less than 5% of the time but isn’t that why we have a sales funnel in the first place?

To give the remaining 95% more opportunities to convert along the way.
There are many ways to reach your target customers and build brand awareness.

Two major ways of creating online awareness include:

  • Content Marketing

Content marketing is all about using content to attract and retain website visitors. It is an organic way to make people aware of your brand. Valuable content can exist in different forms; blog posts, articles, podcasts, infographics, videos e.t.c

  • Paid Ads

Paid ads are also a viable option for creating awareness for your product and service and produces faster results when compared to content marketing. The only disadvantage is that it is more expensive when compared to content marketing.

Ideally, at the beginning of this stage, you want to get these prospects who are already aware of your brand interested in purchasing from you.

To build interest and a lasting customer-manufacturer relationship, email marketing is always a first choice. Email marketing is an important relationship-building tool, budget-friendly and very effective as well. 

To get your prospect on your email list, you want to offer an incentive or what we call a lead magnet in exchange for their email address.

A possible scenario is offering a free ebook, webinar, free consultation or something along that in exchange for their email address.

This lead magnet should not just serve the purpose of hijacking your prospect’s email but also offer value to the prospect. 

You want your prospect to think, if her freebie is this valuable, how much more would her paid product/service be.

That way, you’ll get them to convert even faster.

The goal here is to establish your expertise, show social proof, and help your prospects in whatever way you can. Preparing them to eventually convert as they go down the funnel.

At this stage, you have been able to inform your audience/list about what you offer, given them enough reasons to trust you and it is up to them to make a buying decision.

If your Relationship Stage is well designed, then selling should be easy. Your customer will already want to buy your products or services.

You can either choose to create a sales page; usually a landing page that details the benefits of your offer or you could just sell right from your email copies without redirecting them to another page.

Another way to improve sales results is to use urgency or scarcity to get people to buy more.

This is the stage where you finally reap the rewards of your labour.

At this stage, the prospect is becoming a customer by finalizing the deal with you, clicking the purchase button and transferring that money to your bank account.
